Top 10 Best Sunscreens for Face

When you head to the beach or the pool, make sure you pack sunscreen along with your towel and favorite book.

Dermatologists recommend that we wear sunscreen on our faces every day regardless of the season. While this sounds like an excessive step when you are already busy, sunscreen protects your skin from dangerous UVA and UVB rays to prevent wrinkles, skin discoloration, and even skin cancer.

However, all sunscreens are not created equal. We want help you find the right kind for you, we have broken down the different types of face sunscreens as well as compiled the top 10 sunscreens that you can buy to protect your skin from the summer sun.

What Makes a Face Sunscreen the Best?

There are several different things to look for that you will find in the best sunscreen. You want it to fully protect your skin from the sun but also feel good on your face. These are key features and ingredients that all of the top rated sunscreens for face will have.

  • Broad Spectrum Protection — Any face sunscreen should protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Both can impact the skin and cause cosmetic and serious damage. Everyone should utilize a sunscreen with this level of protection, as both types of rays are emitted from the sun.
  • Sun Protection Factor of at Least 30 — It is essential that any face sunscreen has an SPF of at least 30. This means that the sunscreen will block 97 percent of UVB rays, which you want in order to minimize skin disease and damage. While you can choose higher protection factors, the difference in prevention between SPF 30 and SPF 50 is only 1 percent, while the protection of lower SPFs is far more reduced, so SPF 30 is sufficient.
  • Zinc Oxide — Zinc oxide has many uses on your body, including treating chapped skin, and is used in most diaper rash creams. Another key benefit is that it protects your skin against the sun. This mineral reflects ultraviolet radiation and scatters it to prevent your skin from absorbing it. Zinc oxide is the purest type of sunblock available and can be used on its own, though it can go on thick and greasy when it’s not diluted.
  • Titanium Dioxide — This is another component that provides broad spectrum coverage against both types of ultraviolet rays. Either it or zinc oxide is typically the sun-blocking ingredient in sunscreens. It is very gentle on the skin, especially irritated areas, making it a good choice if you have sensitive skin. However, it can be carcinogenic if inhaled, so you may want to use it in lotions instead of sprays.

What are the Different Types of Face Sunscreen?

Top 10 Best Sunscreens for Face

While the top rated sunscreens for face all incorporate most or all of the features listed above, there are some variations in the different products available.

Here are some of the types of face sunscreens available, as well as some pros and cons of each to help you determine the best one for your needs.

Best Moisturizer with Sunscreen for Face

A moisturizer with sunscreen is the best of both worlds for your face. It leaves your skin feeling smooth and hydrated while also protecting you from the sun’s harmful rays. The best ones also include antioxidants, which give your skin a youthful appearance, and tint to help conceal blemishes.

If your skin breaks out easily or is very sensitive, some moisturizers may make these conditions worse. In these cases, look for a noncomedogenic formula.

Thrive produces one of the top moisturizing sunscreens.

Face Sunscreen Spray

While sunscreen sprays are typically not recommended because of their inconsistent and insufficient application, they can be useful for facial coverage in certain situations.

Particularly if you wear makeup, sprays can be put on afterward and reapplied without smudging.

Neutrogena offers a lightweight and silky spray that you will love for this purpose.

Best Face Tanning Lotion

Particularly in the winter months, you may prefer a sunscreen that also includes a self-tanner. A tanning lotion designed specifically for your face will have a better balance of color than whole body tanners and are typically packed with hydrating and moisturizing ingredients.

Gel Sunscreen for Face

These sunscreens are different than zinc oxide or titanium dioxide based lotions, as they are chemically concocted to absorb the ultraviolet rays.

Although the use of chemicals may be a con for you, as they can be absorbed into the skin, the silky and nearly invisible feel of gel sunscreens is a huge bonus if that does not bother you.

Julep makes an incredibly smooth and luxurious gel that even works flawlessly over makeup.

Best Mineral Sunscreen for Face

Mineral sunscreens work by blocking ultraviolet rays from contacting and being absorbed into the skin. While these sunscreens are very effective, some can make your skin feel very greasy, go on heavy or contribute to your oily skin.

The best mineral sunscreen for you will depend on your skin type and preferences for the feel.

Drunk Elephant makes a mineral sunscreen that blends well and feels weightless.

I hear that sunscreen also helps with screen cancer, I mean prevention of skin cancer from the rays of the sun. I feel they are really important and I can understand why scientists will say owe should wear them everytime. I didn’t know that there were different types of sunscreen but after reading your post, I have a better understanding. I currently have a sunscreen I use but I’ll bookmark this post so I can get some from here  when next I want to purchase sunscreens. Great post here. Thanks

Excellent article and surely of great help. Since it is summer time, there’s need to put all precautions forward to curb sun effects on our body especially face. I just exhausted my sunscreen product and I’m in the process of getting another one before I stumble on this website. You have provided a great list of great products and I like the thrive natural face moisturizer and mineral facial sunscree because I like to wear make up and it was clearly stated that it is best suited for people who wear make ups. Thanks

I’ve long been a fan of Olay’s products and currently use the SPF 35 one you list. However, I’m starting to think that might not offer enough protection for the summer months and am interested to see in your post that Neutrogena, another one of my favourite brands, now offers an SPF 100+ moisturiser. It is extremely reasonably priced so I think I will add it to my shopping list. Thank you for a well-researched and very informative post.

At first when I heard  sunscreens  what came in my minds is sun glasses but later I understood that they are in form of jerry to protect our bodies. However I would like to ask you asmall question, I went ahead to amazon to check if I can buy one And  all of them are expensive. can you get for me alternative where I can buy sunscreens at a cheaper price? Let me here your response.

    • Arta

      Hey there

During all of my investigations and experiences so far I have learned that quality and good workmanship costs. And it is a no surprise as the more qualitative the ingredients, the higher the price but the more qualitative the end product.

As cosmetics are means applied directly on your skin so penetrating directly in your body, I do feel this is the area we should highly and seriously evaluate if this is worth saving few bucks by getting a cheaper product but in the meantime also sacrificing the quality and exposing our health to danger? I guess this is a question we should reply to ourselves and this is the reason I post here products I believe in – the ones I would use (have used) by myself even if these are not amongst the cheapest ones.

      Hope this helps, Arta

This was an excellent tutorial on the attributes that you should look for when considering a sunscreen for daily use, and the list of the top 10 best sunscreen products for the face based on the criteria that you laid out was informative and helpful too. It is a fact that we all need to pay attention to protecting exposed areas of our skin.

I really had no idea that there were so many variations of sunscreen products that you can get, but on the other hand, I generally did not pay attention other than considering the SPF factor. I can see that I have been remiss and I will be more discerning for future purchases.

About 11 months ago I was diagnosed with skin cancer, and have had treatment since then plus altered my diet and lifestyle quite a bit. I do try to stay out of the sun now and I will try the 3Lab Perfect Sunscreen, as it has that high SPF protection factor and a lot of ingredients I like. I need something I can use daily, even if not directly in the sun I have to be careful. Thanks for the great tips!

Thank you for this information on the top 10 best sunscreens for the face. My girlfriend and I was just discussing this topic the other night as we are planning our winter vacation here in the U.S. to Australia which will be summertime there. Both of us already have a natural brown ran skin tone but she wants to find a light sunscreen in feel with max protection.

I personally do not use much sunscreen because I rarely lay out in the sun. I am always in the water or doing some kind of outdoor activity while wearing a light white t-shirt and a visor/cap. I will mainly use the sunscreen on my arms and legs. But on those rare occasions when I do lay in the sun I want a very light and moisturizing face sunscreen. This review is a big help!

I love how well thought out and informative this post about sunscreen and sun tan lotions was.  It really is important to protect your face and in my case the top of my head from the sun.   My wife sales skincare products as well and really gets after me when I don’t apply them to my face and arms when I go out.  I am in my 40s and have sun damage.  I use to swim every summer as a kid and sometimes would forget to apply the sunscreen.  This is important for all ages.  I look forward to trying out some of your recommendations soon.  Thanks.

  9. krystlezee

When I went on my trip this past summer, I’d gone on a long hike and only used a spray on sunscreen.  And it wasn’t one that wasn’t meant to be used on the face, but it was all I had.  It was during this trip that I began to realize the importance of face sunscreen.  I’d thought about it in passing before, but never really put much emphasis on it.  I always just got the ones to use for my whole body.  The more I thought about face sunscreens the more I wanted to know the differences and which ones are good options to consider.  So thanks for sharing your list of face sunscreens!  I’ll be sure to keep them in mind when I go shopping for skincare products next!

  10. Chloe

I must confess I’m really glad to have come across this post which give so many suggestions. My daughter got sunburned sometime last year, even after applying a sunscreen and since then she have been angry with any sunscreen she sees saying they are akk not good. I promised to get her a good one and I believe I have found it. Considering her love for makeup anywhere and everywhere, I have decided to get her the Olay sun facial moisturizer. She would be super happy to see it. Thanks for sharing such useful post.

  11. Tim

This is such a great post for people who love to hit the beach.

I think I really need to start wearing and appreciating sunscreen, especially that I live in Australia, the sun down here is toxic, and skin cancer rate here is so high. I never liked to put sunscreen on my body because I don’t like the oily feeling, but I guess health is much more important.

Thanks for sharing, keep up the good work!

  12. Glen

I use La roche Posay cool water sunscreen. I see my dermatologist every 6 months as a stage 3 melanoma cancer survivor and continue to have issues related to pre-cancerous skin conditions. I can’t say enough about taking care of your skin. Your post does a great job explaining the types of sunscreens. I use a lotion sunscreen because it covers the best. Cost is not an issue because of the consequences of sun-caused skin conditions.

  13. Willy

This is a really educating and helpful article. I have always heard about sun screen but didn’t know much about it. I do not know much about why it is used or what it prevents until now. I never know that they can be so effective and helpful for healthy skin and prevention against infection. The list of sunscreen also listed here are nice and I would live to have one for me and my partner. Thanks for this great job.

  14. JJ

Thanks for an in-depth look at sunscreens. I have been using them for years but I usually just buy a brand that gives me spf 50 protection. My dermatologist says I have melasma and I need to pay attention to my sunscreen habits. I agree with you that in choosing one, I should choose one that feels good on my face. My 2 biggest concerns are (1) I sweat a lot on my forehead so sunscreens just run off my forehead. (2) to remember to repeat application during the day. Thank you for introducing me to the option of the spray. Good information in this article.

  15. Michel

La Roche-Posay is my favourite sunscreen when out in the sun as it cools you down when you apply it, unlike most other brands that just make you feel sweaty and stickier. I also have sensitive skin, so this one works well for me when outdoors in the sun.

For normal everyday wear, I use 15 SPF. as I don’t go in the sun a lot as work inside. Is this enough for everyday use indoors? I hate thick sticky creams for normal everyday use, but maybe they are necessary?

    • Arta

      Hey Michel

SPF 15 is definitely enough for everyday use when working indoors. Many brands also offer daily facial creams with SPF 15 so it shouldn’t always be a sunscreen to use.

      Hope this helps, Arta

  16. Ropata

Back in the old days I thought I was indestructible in the sun and loved the change in skin color:) I sure do pay for it in my latter years and peel up so fast. And often very Raw. I like to keep up with the best sunscreens to protect my face and I really like what you have done here.

My kids can’t look at the sun without a good sunscreen without a good same old story lecture from Dad that’s for sure. It’s coming up summer here in New Zealand you have made my preparation very easy.

    Brilliant Stuff Cheers

  17. DreaJay

This is really nice I must say, I’ve read so many articles about sunscreen before now but none was as elaborate and explanatory as this. It’s really true that our faces needs to be protected form the harmful ray of the sunlight as we mostly come directly in contact with it and this is mostly at the beach. My wife loves going swimming and I think getting her one of these lovely products will be a very nice thing and I know she’s going to love it. One sure thing I know about all these good and reliable products is they are of best quality and they definitely are cost because they are worth the price. Thanks for sharing this article, it’s really educative and informative.

  18. Wildecoll

Many people still don’t know the essence of sunscreen and that’s why they are in the present health condition they are now, our skin needs to be protected from direct contact with sunlight and this is why sunscreen is very needed for beaches, swimming pools and so on. I’ve actually read a bit but i didn’t know there are really nice products like this and this much actually. This post will be of help to many, thanks for sharing this life saving  article, it’s sensitizing and educative.

  19. Abul Basher

Hi, thank you very much for publishing a great article with a nice title “Top 10 Best Sun Screens For The Face”. For the past few days, I was looking for the best sun screen for my face. Let me know please, can I use “Coola sun care classic spot face sunscreen” to oily skin?. I hope to get more great article from you in the future.

    • Arta

      Hi Abul

The Coola sun care classic sport face sunscreen is suitable for any skin type as long as it is used on the face and neck.

      Cheers, Arta

  20. Linda Cooper

Interesting and informative post, thank you. While I do use sunscreen in the summer, when I remember, I hadn’t thought of it in the winter.

Though in the UK their isn’t much strength in the winter sun it does still make sense to protect your skin through the winter too. In fact, as you said, it should be year round. Many of us, especially as we get older, look  for the best anti wrinkle creams, without considering the cause of many of them, the sun.

This has certainly given me food for thought and I will consider adding sunscreen in the winter for when I am out and about.

  21. Sathi

    Hello Dear,

I have reading your great article about the Top 10 best sunscreens for face cream. This is really helpful for our skin. This cream is very effective in protecting the skin from the harmful sun rays.I use all the Produce of the brand in OLay’s. Which  protects the skin from the harmful sun rays that protect against skin cancer so I am a fan of it.On Christmas occasion I want to give my friend a sunscreen cream and buy one for me.I want to buy face  sunscreen spray and Thrive natural face moisturizer and mineral facial sunscreen products.Well, does this product have any side effects and how much it costs? My Skin Lots of Oily Skin The two products I mention are what can i use to know which one is the best product for oily skin?

Thanks to shearing this helpful products.

    • Arta

      Hello Sathi

Thank you for your comment regarding top 10 best sunscreens for the face. Thrive sunscreen is without doubt a great choice, however, it could not be suitable for everybody as we all are so different. It was mentioned that this sunscreen has caused irritation to some people. Some customers has mentioned it has made their skin dry while being outside. The best what I would suggest would be to try this sunscreen on little part of your body and expose it to sun to see whether or not there is any consequence, and only then make the purchase.

The majority of customers are very happy about this sunscreen – but it just doesn’t work for everyone.

The positive side is that it is reef-safe.

      Hope this helps, Arta

  22. Mikhail

    Thanks for your article,

It’s funny that I came across your article after reading about the craze of perineum sunning. Apparently it raises your chi. I don’t know. I’m sure that those people that are into getting sun on their behinds would greatly benefit from reading your article. Protection from the sun is fairly important, especially since people like to eat things that don’t necessarily contribute to their natural protection from the sun.

  23. Kate

I never get out of the house without applying sunscreen on my skin. I take more care with my face, so I can tell that I am very careful and specific with the products I use on it. I have tried the La Roche Posay Anthelios Cooling Water Sunscreen and it is exactly as you said. One of the best facial sunscreens out there right now. However, since I am currently in the hunt for another, do you maybe have any suggestions for acne-prone skin?

    • Arta

      Hi Kate

Thank you for your comment. I would suggest reading here to find suggestions for the best sunscreens for acne-prone skin.

Hope this helps. Otherwise, PLS do not hesitate to get in touch again and I will do my best to help you.

  24. Feji ben

I must say that this are indeed the top best sunscreen to get for the face because summer is fast approaching and we must be well prepared for wats ahead of us….as we all know the face is the most visible part of the human body and must be well protected from the harsh sun

  25. Tucker

My face is really the only place that I will put on sunscreen. On my arms and legs, I prefer to wear long sleeves or pants for sun protection. Of course, I do have the benefit of darker skin that means I don’t get sunburnt all that easily. I go for zinc-based sunscreens for my face, nose, and neck, so the screen in your article that interests me most is the EltaMD UV Daily Facial Sunscreen because it contains hyaluronic acid!

  26. Jennie

Great post! I have always believed in sunscreen, but there are times that you don’t even think about it.  I think the best thing for people like me is moisturizer.  I put lotion on my face and body after the shower so that would work perfectly. Thrive Natural Face Moisturizer seems to be a perfect fit for me.  The antioxidants are definitely a plus.  Thanks again for the information.

  27. Ann

Hi! I know that not all sunscreens are created equal. Just recently I went three days to an area were there are all these different nice beaches. And at the end of the three days I had sunburns over sunburns. I used sunscreen, but it seemed to wash away with water super quick.

I don’t want this to happen to me again and I want to have a couple of the best sunscreens I can possibly buy always at home. And in my book it’s La Roche-Posay Anthelios.

  28. Fahim Shahriar Sakib

Hi there! Your article is really great. I could know many things about sunscreen through your article. I could realize the importance of sunscreen and I think I should start using it as summer’s ahead.
I have decided that I will order olay. I liked its 35 SPF coverage. I think it will surely work and protect from sun.
