Swimsuits Hide Belly Fat – 12 Flattering Options

Swimsuits hide belly fat

In my 20s, I always looked forward to swimsuit season. I loved showing off my flat tummy and was at complete ease lounging poolside with my friends. Believe it or not, I actually enjoyed shopping for bikinis, and I often preferred to show as much skin as possible! Well, fast forward ten years and things are a little different. I’m older, wiser, and just a little bit rounder.

Unfortunately, this means I no longer have the same confidence I used to have. My friends ask me why I always wear beach cover-ups and rarely get in the water. It makes me sad to sit on my towel and watch my family have fun without me.

Swimsuits Hide Belly Fat – Myth or Fact?

This past June, I decided things had to change. I did my research and found a few great swimsuits that hide belly fat. A few swipes of my credit card later, I had my confidence back! I may never again have a flat tummy, but this summer I rediscovered my love of the beach.

I’d like to help you do the same. In this article, I am going to discuss a few different types of swimming suits that hide your tummy fat. We are going to look at patterned suits, ruched suits, draped suits, and body shaping suits. I am confident that with the information in this article, you’ll be able to face your next beach trip with confidence and style.

Printed Suits Distracting the Eye

I’ve noticed that many women with body confidence issues tend to gravitate towards solid neutral colors, especially black. We don’t want to draw any unwanted attention to our bodies, and maybe instinctively feel that if we don’t choose a loud pattern, no one will look at us. I totally understand that instinct, but it can lead you to choose a rather plain suit that you might not be in love with.

In actuality, a nice pattern can be fun and flattering. Swimsuits hide belly fat by drawing the eye to look elsewhere. If you are wearing a patterned swimsuit, people won’t be looking at your belly. Instead, they will be looking at the pattern on your suit! Patterns also break up large surface areas into small and manageable pieces and therefore create the illusion of a smaller area.

If you are choosing a patterned suit, I suggest going for a small, detailed pattern over a large one. This will create a textured effect. Here are a few of my favorites:

Ruched Suits – Shape Your Silhouette in Style

Ruched suits are one of my favorite styles. I don’t just like them because they are swimming suits that hide your belly fat. I simply think they are some of the most beautifully styled suits, no matter your figure. For those who aren’t familiar with the term, a ruched suit is one that has gathers in the material, like little folds along the front

I often wear a ruched suit when I am going to play in the waves because I love the extra support it gives me. They are a little more fashion forward than many of the suits discussed in this article, and I always get a ton of compliments from my friends whenever I wear one of my ruched suits!

Ruched suits do have their downsides, though. They are a little thicker than most swimsuits, which some women can find uncomfortable. They also require more careful maintenance than some other suits because the stitching along the ruches can be somewhat delicate. In my mind, however, the confidence I get is well worth it! Here are a few of my favorites:

Draped Suits – Elegant Camouflage

If any swimsuits hide belly fat, draped suits might be the ones! They are exactly what they sound like: swimsuits with a drape of fabric across your tummy! The first time I wore one, I thought it might be uncomfortable, but I love the feeling of the drape of fabric floating around my skin in the water. It makes me feel like a mermaid!

Those of you who are looking for a swimsuit that can hold you in and provide support should look elsewhere. These suits are deliberately designed to be loose and hang away from your body, so it doesn’t provide the same stability as some of the other styles in this list.

Some women also feel it makes them look a little bigger than they actually are! Draped suits totally conceal the shape of the body, leaving people to imagine what you might be hiding. Some people see that as a positive aspect of these suits, but others prefer something that hugs the figure a bit more.

One advantage of these suits is that if you have the confidence, you can wear a draped bikini and a high-waisted bikini bottom and enjoy the feeling of being sexy while controlling your problem areas. If you miss the freedom of a bikini but aren’t ready to show off everything just yet, this could be a good option for you. You might want to check out some of these:

Body Shaping Swimsuits – Functional Solution

Most of us are familiar with shape wear. Shape wear is typically worn under the clothes to smooth out rolls, bulges, and softness. When I wear it, I instantly feel my confidence skyrocket! Best of all, no one can ever tell I am wearing it.

Body shaping swimsuits work much the same way. They are specially designed to hold back all the jiggly parts of our bodies and create a smooth, womanly figure. If you are wearing a body shaping swimsuit, your belly will look much flatter than normal.

The only downside, as far as I’m concerned, is that the tightness can be a little uncomfortable. You’ll probably have to wear a body shaping suit a few times before you get used to it. The boost in confidence will make for one of your best beach trips yet! I recommend checking out these ones:

How to Choose the Perfect Swimsuit?

Alright, so maybe you’ve decided on a style. But how do you decide from all of the countless options out there? Well, there are a few things you should look for.

Especially when choosing a one piece, it is important to make sure that the length of the suit from your shoulders to your waist is correct. If this fit isn’t exactly right, you’ll spend a miserable day at the beach tugging at your suit.

If you are ordering online, it is worth taking the time to get a measuring tape and checking your size rather than just assuming that a suit that fits across your bust and hips will also have the right length.

All swimsuits are made of a similar material, but some manufacturers use a high quality fabric than others. When looking for swimming suits that hide your tummy fat, you’ll want a thicker material, since that is both more durable and more likely to provide lasting coverage in those problem areas.

If you are shopping in stores, make sure to handle the fabric and look for smoothness and stretchiness. If you are shopping online, check the reviews. If customers consistently report the same problem, chances are that you will face a similar issue.

Bust Support

Even though you are focused on your tummy, you don’t want to neglect your chest! Make sure the suit has enough support in the bust to allow you to feel comfortable and relaxed.

Some suits have underwires or built in cups, while others simply have a support panel. I recommend trying on a few to get an idea of the support that your body needs.

Happy shopping!

Let’s face it, almost everyone feels nervous the first time they take off their cover-up at a beach. I certainly do! But we all deserve to feel comfortable and truly enjoy our summers.

A well-fitted bathing suit can reduce your anxiety and allow you to enjoy yourself the way that you should. Take the time to pamper yourself a little, and don’t feel rushed into making a choice.

Whether you choose a patterned, ruched, draped, or body shaping suit, make sure to wear it with pride.

I personally used to struggle with body image in high school and trying to find the right kind of bathing suit that I could feel comfortable in was always such a struggle for me. It’s interesting to see that swimsuits with designs move the attention away from our belly fat and more onto the design!

Thank you so much for these tips – I will definitely be using them to find some new bathing suits for myself! 🙂

I love a good one piece Swimsuit, and after reading this I realized that mine’s all black 😑 you’re totally right! I’m going straight to the store to go buy that floral one I’ve been eyeballing for a while now.

Also, those draped tops.. How have I never seen these before? Thank you! Swim suits are my addiction and I think you just made it worse haha. At least it’s almost the end of the season and they should be going on sale now!

I’m glad to hear that you decided it was time for a change. You deserve to be out there having fun with your family. Everyone goes through changes with their body from time to time. You’ve provided some excellent choices for the ladies here. I think my favorite out of them all are the printed suits. They are really lovely and should be worn with confidence. Who cares what people think, the most important thing is to be happy and out there with family and friends having fun!

Great article, my girlfriend recently gave birth to our first child and while the pregnancy weight is coming off pretty fast we have a few days booked away next month for just the two of us and I know she is desperately trying to shift the last few pounds before that happens. One of these costumes sounds like a great option though if she is a bit self conscious though. She’s only 5 1 is there one of these designs that is better for shorter women that the others?

      Hey Nate

Usually, petite women look for options to visually lengthen their bodies and this can be achieved by below points:

      1. A swimsuit with vertical print

      2. A lower cut neckline

      3. High cut bottoms

So if a bathing suit matches any of above, it would be a perfect choice for petite women.

      Hope this helps, Arta

Most of the bikinis my wife own are plain solid colors. You are right! I think floral bikinis would look great on her! Anyway, still looking for nice floral patterns but would like to purchase one from you. I hope she’ll like it. Thank you for sharing this. It’s a good thing that I stumbled upon your website! All the best! Cheers!

  6. AirplaneJane

Absolutelty loved the post. As a mom of two postpartum body twice these tips are amazing. I am usual someone that wants to stick to solid colors, but learning these tricks are amazing.

We all have those days when we are feeling a bit bloated and these suits seem like they will do the trick to hide the bulge.

WOW!!! Great review, I learned how to choose the best swimsuit, I have captured your points to consider. I would prefer Retro halter-top floral, and I felt the length, material, and bust support, I know it will be comfortable for my wife, your write-up is fantastic and educative. Thank you for sharing this article.

Hi! Nice post, I used to not worry about how I look in swimsuits, but now my belly is becoming chubbier and it really shows after I’ve had some food. I don’t really like wearing things with too many colours and patterns on them, I think the retro ruffled ruched tankini looks like something I’d like to wear, and it hides belly fat too as you mentioned. I’ll keep this in mind when I get a new swimming suit.

What a Great and interesting review on swimsuits! My search for the kinds of swimsuit that would help hide my partners belly fat and I’ll looking shape is over with this review. It has fully helped me locate what I want for her and what she wishes to get for her  self…. Now I have a reassurance that we would both have a nice time on the beach without having to talk about feeling awkward on the Beach… Thanks for this enlightenment, I hope to see more of your helpful review. This would go a long way to install a smile on our faces.

Hello, it’s me again, looking for a tankini that my girlfriend would love receiving and wearing. Looking through the list of swimsuits shared here, my attention was drawn towards the patterned tankini in the middle of the article. I want to order this one, plus the crossback one, I’m sure my chubby girlfriend would love the idea that her belly fat won’t be noticed by the special design and stitches. She will look sexy with these despite being chubby.

Thanks again. I’ll share this post with my friends and family.

Thank you so much for this information. My girlfriend and I are going on a Caribbean cruise at the end of August and she wants me to go swimsuit shopping with her so I can give my opinion. She is a bit self conscious of her belly which isn’t that bad but you know how women can be.

She had always loved wearing bikinis but now wants to wear plain swimsuits. I told her that a swimsuit with a pattern would be better than a solid color, for the same reasons you stated above. After reading this post and looking at the pictures, I think she may like that blue draped bikini.

I am going to show this website to her and see which ones she likes. I personally like all of them except the ruched style. That just looks like it would bring too much attention to the torso area, whereas the other styles seem to distract better. But in the end it will be my girlfriends decision along with my support.

Honestly, wearing a swim suit at the beach is always a big problem for me. Like you, I just seem to lose my confidence. I don’t even like going to the beach not because I don’t want to experience it like I used to many years ago but because I feel ashamed. I think I should get this body shaping swim suits and I’m glad you wrote this. I’ll see how they can help me get back my confidence.

  15. Anne-Sophie

Hello! Thanks a lot for this thorough review on how to hide my belly on the beach. I am grateful, as I intend to go back to the beach in September, when the sun will be less hot! And yes, I wish I could distract people’s attention to something else, even though I am aware of the fact that I am not the center of attention. It’s just that I lack confidence. So thank you for your advice, I will consider investing in draped suits. Take care. Anso

Hi. I’ve just been checking out your article on swim suites that hide body fat. Most of us put on a bit of weight as we get older . Unfortunately this extra weight turns normally extrovert people into introverts. My wife has always been a happy go lucky person. She loves the beach and has always enjoyed a swim. Lately i noticed she didn’t want to go there anymore and if she did, she refused to wear a bathing suite. When I quizzed her on this she said it was because the suites she had showed her fat.  I’m going to get her to have a look at your site, there are so many costumes to choose from that I would have no idea which one she’d like. We will have a closer look together and hopefully she’ll be happy to choose one. Thanks Jim

I really appreciate this article.  I, too, went from bikinis to not even wanting to be seen in a swimsuit just because of a few extra pounds.  I must say that ruching has been my go to.  Your points on pattern are also well taken as they can hide a “multitude of sins”!  I have a favourite tankini that makes me look GREAT!  These swimsuits may cost a little more but the additional cost will buy you a more durable and figure flattering suit that will last for years.  The pictures in your article really show off how great your selection of suits look!

  18. Twack Romero

OK, I’ll come clean, I’m not a woman and I’m not looking for a swimsuit. However, I do have a wife and she’s been reading over my shoulder from the moment I read out the opening paragraph. I’ve got no problem with stuff not being in the same place as it was twenty years ago, mines still in the same place, there’s just more of it. My wife, however, doesn’t have the same outlook as me and has struggled over the last few years to find something she is both comfortable and confident in. Looking through the different options and designs it looks like there’s a winner that needs exploring further. Consensus is that the ‘Ruched’ variey would work best, although which particular style/design is where further investigation needs to be. I may well relinquish the laptop for the next while.

Thanks for sharing these tankini options that can help to hide areas that may not inspire personal confidence. I have found that tankinis are versatile and great option for outdoor activities that may not be ideal for a full swimsuit. The top can be paired with shorts and it’s easy to change into the tankini bottom if you do want to go for a swim. I’ve found these to be great when on hikes, tubing, and even washing the car!

  20. C

Thank you for these great ideas. These bathing suits are Very nice. The material style as well as the design are very Flattering. My favorite is the v-neck one piece. I really like the designs on it, it looks like a collage of zoo animals. I think these bathing suits will help me have a nice time at the beach without feeling as self-conscious.

That’s a very detailed and informative post. Thanks for putting in all the time to compile this. I was lookin on the web for something like this for my girlfriend. Thank god I stopped by your site. You have a great collection of swimwear here. My girlfriend is kinda chubby so she is shy whenever we are out on the beach. Well, I am gonna show this page to her and hopefully, she finds your post uplifting.

  22. Shan

These are some wonderful ideas! I love visiting your site, you always have the best tips and tricks when it comes to picking the swim suit that is perfect for my body type and shape!

I am really drawn toward the Blue Draped Tankini and the Floral Ruched One piece. After having 5 children swim suit shopping had become one of my least favorite tasks. After reading your tips, I am actually enjoying it this year – I’ve purchased 2 already!! Thanks so much!

  23. Roland

Excellent article you have written up here and would surely be of great help to my wife. Having given birth, her belly is yet to fully take shape after the protruding period and I would really like to get some of these swim suits for her just to help in hiding her belly. Though she has lost her confidence to flaunt her body but then, I think this would serve as a great confidence booster back. Thanks

  24. Henderson

This is one thing that kept me off  the beach this summer. I like the fact that you can come up with a solution for people like me who have lost their confidence. You well understand how I feel since you too was very sexy in the suit. Well, now that you have brought this types of swim suits to my notice, I think I should try out the printed type. Thanks for the help.

  25. Dane

Hello there thanks for this post, my girl usually feel bad about her belly fat and because of this sometimes doesn’t even want to visit the beach talk more of wearing a tankini top. I’ll love her to be free and accept who she is as said in this post abd certainly get her some really nice tankini top myself. Thanks once again

  26. Jones

Wow, this is a really interesting post, fun reading through and I’ve discovered a new thing to recommend to my aunt, lol. Many people lost the courage to have fun at the beach because of belly fat and here it is, the perfect solution to hiding it, swimsuits that hide belly fat. I like the V-neck body shaking swimsuit. All you need to do is consider some factors to choose a perfect swimsuit like length, the material, and bust support, then get yourself one. This article is great, I love it.

  27. Stella

I’m definitely one of those women who has drifted away from going to the beach much. But, you know, I always did enjoy those days when you packed up and spent the whole day enjoying the sun and water. It’s so relaxing.

Your post has motivated me to get back in a suit and have some down time from my busy schedule. I love all of the selections you’ve highlighted here. I especially like the floral patterns and the ruched swimsuits. They look sort of “retro.”

Thanks for turning my thoughts back to the joys of fun in the sun, and I’ll bookmark this to choose the best suit for my confidence boost.

    Stella 🙂

I love style personally and that off shoulder floral one piece got me thinking if I should purchase more. I have a big belly, okay not so big but am open to a smaller one lol. So, me having that size of my belly I prefer to cover it and show off either my shoulders or my back since it is abit slim. I love this article and am open to more one piece designed swimsuit articles.

    Cheers, good job.

This was really on my mind this last summer as I was shopping for a suit. I had gained 30 pounds after 2 spine surgeries and was not feeling like even getting in one. But with a beach trip coming, I finally found a suit with a skirt that I really liked. I also love the long sleeve zip lightweight cover for those chilly evenings by the water. Truly there are many beautiful suits here to choose from. Great information and your site is so easy to maneuver around to find great topics.
